Years ago, before referencing modern art become a fad, I was really into Jean-Michel Basquiat. Not just his output or success, but challenges, demons, and what his life said about the tension between art and commerce. I’d watched all the documentaries and would constantly reference Schnabel’s movie like rappers quote mob movies. I believe ’Basquiat’ is a rise-and-fall precautionary tale like Scarface or The Godfather. In fact, Jean-Michel’ became my personal slang for ’tortured artist’. While working on other albums, I decided to start a project that was rooted in popular music yet wildly experimental at the same time and call it ‘Jean-Michel’. I’m glad to finally release a definitive version. Enjoy.
